Baseball Field Revived
After four years of playing all their varsity baseball games off site, baseball is back on campus at the newly dedicated Michael Boyd Athletic Complex. Quick turn around was made possible through the generous donations of parents, alumni and Hall of Fame members. The renovations were done by Northern Pines Lawn and Landscape, Inc. under the supervision and direction of our facilities manager Mike Artley.
“The job was a big one, we had to remeasure everything, cut, and dig out the entire infield and baselines and lay 34 tons of field meal on it,” said Artley. “The weather really held us back and put the job off a whole two weeks, but we were able to get it done,” he added. From the time the first shovel went into the ground until the job was done was an astonishing 48 hours. Northern Pines Lawn and Landscape had been out to the school measuring and planning for weeks so when the weather broke they were able to execute their vision in a very short window. Principal Vandenboom echoed those thoughts by saying, “Unbelievable planning and professionalism on their (Northern Pines Lawn and Landscaping) part made this project happen.”
Varsity Baseball Winning Streak
After starting the season 0-3 the Lakers took the field for the first home game of the year against rival Oakland Christian. It was a hard fought 7-6 victory that included a 3-run home run by senior Zac Erwin. “I’ve coached a lot of games out here before but this one was different in a good way,” said head coach Dan Webster. A 1980 Our Lady of the Lakes grad, Webster coached the 1991 State Championship team and 2005 Catholic League Championship team and is back for his 3rd tenure as the head coach of the Lakers baseball program. “With the athletic complex being named after Coach (Michael) Boyd it means more to come out and win the first game here.”
The winning has been infectious as the Lakers have now rolled up five straight victories including 4-0 in the Catholic League in that span. “We’re starting to learn how to win and believe. We have a one-track mind with our sights set on playing at Comerica Park,” Webster added. The Lakers can go a long way into making that goal a reality this week with two important doubleheaders at home Tuesday vs. Riverview Gabriel Richard and Friday vs. Marine City Cardinal Mooney. Sweeps of both teams would all but guarantee a trip back to Comerica Park. Webster summed it up by saying, “It’s a huge week for us and were starting to play well at the right time.”
