This year our 3rd grade class was tasked with finding and researching an important topic about Michigan. Little did we know how far one student’s story would reach. Brandon W., chose to learn about Michigan’s very own Velvet Peanut Butter. Little did he know that his hard work would gain the attention of this historic Michigan company.
"Velvet Peanut Butter was produced in Livonia from 1963 to 1984. In 2009, after a hiatus of 25 years, Velvet Peanut Butter made a remarkable comeback when former Detroiter Eric Bruce put it back in the market using the same famous recipe. To the delight of many, it can be found on the shelves of several area grocery stores including Meijer, Kroger, Plum Market West Bloomfield, and Westborn Market.” (Livonia Community, 2021)
Brandon’s mother, proud of her son’s work, snapped a picture of him with his project and submitted it to Velvet Peanut Butter. It just so happens that President and CEO of Velvet Peanut Butter, Eric Bruce, is married to Laker Alum, Kim Newell (‘86). Kim’s brother, Chris Newell, also graduated from Lakes in 1991.
After seeing all of the hard work and dedication our Laker student put into his project, Mr. Bruce wanted to show his appreciation. He made a special stop at Our Lady of the Lakes to hand deliver a jar of Velvet Peanut Butter and a t-shirt directly to Brandon. He was kind enough to give an impromptu presentation to the 3rd grade class on the history of Velvet Peanut Butter. Brandon was beyond excited to receive this visit!
We are thankful for the support shown to our Laker students by such an amazing company.
Thank you Velvet Peanut Butter!
