After watching “Living on One Dollar”, a documentary on living in rural Guatemala on $1 a day, Our Lady of the Lake’s Spanish II students had the idea to to create their own markets and try their luck at haggling. Students broke into groups to plan and design their market booths.
On the day of the market, the students drew “salaries” and each received a different amount of Colombian pesos to barter with at the market. All of the selling and haggling was done in Spanish. The students competed for a variety of titles including: most creative booth, more enthusiastic seller, and best haggler.
This project was a great opportunity for students to practice their real-world communication. They also received cultural exposure with haggling, a new currency, and salary variation.
