This past Friday, October 13, the Spanish 4 class took a field trip down to Detroit. The first place visit was to St. Joseph Oratory in Detroit. The class came together to celebrate a low Mass in Latin. The Latin Mass was very different from a traditional Sunday Mass; for example, the priest had his back to the congregation the whole time. The Eucharist was also received while kneeling at the communion rail. After Mass, Canon Stein gave a tour of the church. He showed the students around the beautiful building and told about the improvements they plan on making in the future.
After the DIA, the class visited the Detroit Historical Museum. In the basement is a long running exhibit called “The Streets of Old Detroit.” This exhibit consisted of reconstructions of old buildings from Detroit during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Students were able to go inside these buildings and learn about Detroit’s history. It felt like they were truly in that time period. Upstairs there was an exhibit about the 1967 riots in Detroit. It was eye-opening to learn so much about Detroit’s history.
