On April 19th, 2017, nine students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). It started at 5:30 p.m., with Mrs. Childers, the NJHS Advisor, introducing the students. On cue, the NJHS members walked in. In order, there were the officers, the nine inductees, and then the current members. The nine inductees were Alison Anthony, Joseph Anthony, Nicholas Blose, Joseph Davies, Mahana Gallmeyer, Keldon Koshorek, Gabrielle Lampe, Natalie Llewelyn, and Luke Ronquillo. Father Delonay led us in prayer. Principal Vanden Boom then gave the opening remarks. The president of the chapter, Connor Lewis, came up to the podium and talked about the Chapter’s amazing accomplishments. These included sponsoring a boy from a third world country, having food and coat drives, Toys for Tots, and so many more outstanding service projects. After he finished, Lexi Koenig and Kailey Koshorek came up to the podium to talk about NJHS’ history. Then, Bailee Pfahl and Natalie Llewellyn came up to the podium to recite a poem, “A Candle.” Candles give off light when burnt, and light is the main symbol of NJHS.
As taken from the pamphlet given out at the ceremony, “Membership in Our Lady of the Lakes Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society has been earned by the effective demonstration of the five qualities held in high esteem by the Society.” These are the five pillars of NJHS: Leadership, Scholarship, Service, Citizenship, and Character. After reviewing these qualities, the pledge was recited by Mrs. Childers, and the certificates were awarded. Then, each new member was given a candle to light. Cookies and cakes were served afterwards and fun was had by all.
