The Daughters of the American Revolution is a women’s service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism and honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War. DAR members provide millions of hours of community service each year around the world.

On Tuesday, March 14, I received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. This award was created in 1934 and is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship.

This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.

Once a student is chosen as the DAR Good Citizen the student is invited to participate in the scholarship portion of the program. This consists of a personal statement and an essay. Student participation in the scholarship portion of the program is optional. I was given a topic in a sealed envelope and asked to write on how good citizens keep our country growing.

At the award ceremony, I was asked to read some of my essay to the group gathered at the Fountains in Clarkston and I was able to sit and talk with some members that live in our area.
