Our Lady of the Lakes CYO 5/6 #2 boys basketball team won vs Everest 18-14.
Lakes 5/6 Boys #1 Basketball rallied late to defeat Everest 20-17 at home on Saturday.
Lakes trailed 15-13 entering the 4th quarter, but an incredible defensive effort and a clutch 3-point shot by Alex Asai was the difference. With under a minute to go and trailing 17-16, Asai drained a 3-pointer to give Lakes the lead for good. Lakes added a late free throw to close out the scoring.
Dylan Hamel (9 points) and Alex Asai (7 points) led Lakes to their second win on the season.
Coach Blose commented after the game, “A great team win and everyone contributed. We had a key player go down early in the game and every player stepped up to pick up the slack. The 4th quarter was incredible. Our crowd was again awesome and definitely gets an assist for this win. Our defensive effort from our guards Jack Blose and Alex Asai and from Latane Ware, Dylan Hamel and Matthew Nguyen was the difference. The boys did a great job contesting shots and not allow Everest to drive to the basket. Our rebounding was much better late in the game. Alex’s 3-pointer was awesome. He stepped up and made an incredible shot.To hold any team to 2 points in a quarter is pretty impressive. We missed some early shots and will focus on a couple areas this week in practice to prepare for our rematch against St. Joseph’s on Saturday.”
Lakes plays against St. Joseph’s at home, this Saturday at 1:00, January 18, 2020.
WATERFORD OUR LADY 55, FRANKEL JEWISH ACADEMY 45
Grant Ross had 25 points and 14 rebounds to lead Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes to a 55-45 win over Frankel Jewish Academy on Thursday night.
Paddy Morgan added 14 points for the Lakers (2-3).
BLOOMFIELD HILLS >> As any opponent of Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes knows, the Lakers’ 3-point shooting ability can be a real force to be reckoned with.
Such was the case Wednesday as Our Lady of the Lakes recorded six 3-pointers in the first nine minutes of action to quickly distance itself from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood on the scoreboard. From then on, the Lakers were comfortably in control en route to a 54-25 victory.
Freshman Quinn Robak drained four 3-pointers and totaled 21 points, while her junior cousin Brooklyn Robak finished with 20 points and a pair of threes.
“The whole start of the game was really good for us because our last game (on Monday against Bishop Foley) we struggled,” Lakers coach Steve Robak said. “Brooklyn and Quinn saw the ball go through the hoop early, which always helps as a shooter. But we did a lot of good things offensively in terms of our zone defense recognition, understanding where to pass the ball when a certain girl guards you. I would say I’m happy we had a nice game coming off a tough game.”
Down 29-16 at halftime, Cranbrook opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer of its own, but sank into a six-minute scoring drought while Our Lady of the Lakes put up a 16-0 run.
Our Lady of the Lakes drew its record back up to .500 at 4-4 with the victory.
Through the first month of the season, a rash of injuries had been a culprit behind the Lakers’ uncharacteristically slow start. Starters Brooklyn Robak, Isabelle Kline and Alexis Koenig each missed time, leaving the lineup shorthanded for many nights.
“Unfortunately, we’re a long way into the season and we really haven’t had any continuity yet. It’s been a struggle,” Steve Robak said.
The rapid emergence of Quinn Robak during her freshman season, however, has helped keep the Lakers afloat while other players were on the mend.
“I knew she’d be a double digit scorer because not every kid thinks to shoot and that’s her first instinct, sometimes to her detriment,” Steve Robak said of his daughter, Quinn. “As a freshman, that’s the part she’s learning and I think the learning curve has been okay so far. And because Brooklyn and Isabelle were out, and even Alexis, sometimes she was the only one we really had, so she’s had to score a lot more than she will as the season goes on.”
Both teams will play their next game against Clarkston Everest Collegiate, with Cranbrook taking on the Mountaineers Friday and WOLL off until Tuesday.
