WARREN — Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes hasn’t won a Catholic League C-D girls basketball title since 2016.
The Lakers are now one win away from the championship after defeating Royal Oak Shrine, the three-time defending champs, 50-45 in the CHSL C-D semifinals on Tuesday night at Warren Regina.
Our Lady of the Lakes advances to the Catholic League C-D finals against Wixom St. Catherine’s Academy at 5 p.m. on Saturday at U-D Mercy’s Callahan Hall. The Stars topped Madison Heights Bishop Foley, 50-35, in the late game.
“We talked all week about how they are a team that plays hard the whole night,’’ Lakers coach Steve Robak said. “They go to rebound every shot, they drive hard, they just play hard, that’s a tough team to beat. I’m proud of our girls.’’
It wasn’t easy. After holding a 24-22 lead at the half, freshman Quinn Robak (the coach’s daughter) drained two 3-pointers right out of the gate. Then after Shrine’s Allison LaPoint added a basket, Lakers’ senior Isabelle Kline hit another 3, to boost the lead to 33-24 early in the third. The Lakers outscored the Knights, 17-8, in the third quarter.
Those eight minutes were key to the win.
“We’ve struggled in third quarters mightily this year. That third quarter I felt like it was the difference,’’ coach Robak said. “The fourth quarter went their way for big stretches but I felt like the start of the third quarter we made some shots, got them on their heels and gave us the cushion we needed to outlast them because that’s a good team. They kept battling.’’
The Lakers (11-7) were led by cousins, Quinn Robak (18 points) and Brooklyn Robak (15 points).
“Macy (Senerius) was terrific all day. She had a tough assignment on the little guard (Regan Smith). she even had to guard (LaPoint) a little bit and did an awesome job,” Steve Robak said.
He wasn’t even sure if Brooklyn Robak (his niece) would be able to play after she injured her ankle in Saturday’s contest but she hardly sat down the entire game.
Coach Robak also pointed out that Alexis Koenig had nine points and played “relentless.”
