Our Lady of the Lakes CYO 5/6 football won the C Division CYO Championship last Friday at Wisner Stadium with a hard fought 6-0 victory over the previously undefeated Guardian Knights. This was their 6th straight win and 5th straight shutout on the season. After a scoreless first half, Lakes received the 2nd half kick-off and went on a 15 play, 9 minute drive and finally scored on a 5 yard Brody Denver touchdown. Geno Seets connected with Zac Staelgraeve on a huge 26 yard completion on 3rd & 14 to sustain the Laker scoring drive. An Alex Asai interception gave the ball back to the Lakers, who moved downfield on a 9 play time consuming drive.
A late Laker turnover gave the Knights the ball at their own 21 yard line with less than 3 minutes in the game, but the Laker defense rose to the occasion as they have all season. In addition to two false start penalties, a Latane Ware sack moved the Knights back 9 yards and a Max Mersino sack the pushed the Knights further back. On 4th and 31 from their own 1 yard line, Alex Asai’s second interception sealed the victory, as Lakes took a knee to close out the game.
Coach Briolat commented after the game, “Guardian Knights is a very talented team and averaged over 23 points a game. To hold them scoreless was an incredible feat by our boys. Our offensive line and running backs during our 15 play scoring drive were outstanding. Coach Blose made a couple adjustments at halftime on defense, which held the Knights to only 10 plays in the second half and contributed to two turnovers. The coaching staff is so incredibly proud of this team. Our goal from day one was to walk as champions at Ford Field, which we will get to do on October 19th. For our 6th graders who have been with the program since 3rd grade, this marks their 3rd division championship in four years.”
Lakes looks to make it 7 straight win with a game against St. Charles-Monroe this Saturday, October 5 at Wisner Stadium at 1 p.m.
